He began writing and interviewing many people, including the late cardinal himself, prior to Cardinal Soter’s demise. The last few years after his retirement, Sam decided to write the life story of His Eminence, Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez with whom he had a close relationship. He never lost track of his mission for the Church. Sam was well known on the international scene, meeting foreign delegates and also was blessed to have had an audience with His Holiness Pope St John Paul II and another audience, this time with his wife, Esther, beside him.ĭespite the many high profile positions he held, Sam never blew his own trumpet and always preferred to stay out of the limelight. He was also involved in Tamil liturgical music. He also was invited to be a member of the Asian Communication Training Team under the banner of OCIC/UNDA Asia which was responsible for the formation of bishops, clergy, religious and laity in Pakistan, Burma and other Asian countries.Īfter Vatican Council II, Sam transcribed the lyrics of songs from open reel to written form for the Masses. He was instrumental in forming the Archdiocesan Peninsular Malaysia Social Communications Commission and the Regional Commission for Social Communications (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei). He initiated CISCOM, (Churches Initiative for Social Communication), an ecumenical organisation. He was also instrumental in the gathering of Catholic Media professionals from the secular media. He was a member of the Peninsular Malaysia Pastoral Team and helped organise the Peninsular Malaysia Pastoral Conventions. In 1987 he was named President of OCIC (the International Catholic Organisation for Cinema and Audio-visuals) Asia, and in 1990 was World Vice-President. Sam played many roles, and as director of Cahayasuara Communications Centre, was involved in many historical events, both in the local Church and at the international level. The Cahayasuara Communications Centre was a dream come true for this humble man, who dedicated his life to social communications. The long journey, which began in 1967 from an audio visual room at St Joseph’s parish house, then moved to Cardijn House, Bukit Nanas, to a building in the vicinity of the Church of St Anthony, and finally the dream of having a fully equipped communications centre culminated with much joy and pride and pageantry on November 22, 1997. He also acted in plays, both on stage and on radio, with his group The Blue Heavens alongside the late Bosco D’Cruz. Sam was a radio broadcaster and news presenter, both on radio and television, from the late 1960s. It was the beginning of a great plan God had for him, a plan that would span more than 50 years in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur. Samson had his humble beginnings in Sentul and spent a great deal of time involved in the parish’s youth activities. Samson as a familiar name and synonymous with audio visuals, broadcasting, music and stage plays at the Church of St Joseph.
